Adult Autism Assessments

Understanding whether you are on the autism spectrum can be a profound and transformative experience. Many adults seek autism assessments to gain clarity, find support, and better understand their unique ways of thinking and interacting with the world.

What is Autism?

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors. Autism is a spectrum, meaning it affects individuals in diverse ways and to varying degrees.

In adults, autism can present as challenges with social interactions, difficulties in understanding social cues, a preference for routines, and intense focus on specific interests. Recognizing these traits and understanding how they impact daily life can lead to better self-awareness and access to appropriate support and resources.

The assessment

What to expect during the assessment

At Dr Compton-Smith Clinical Psychology, an autism assessment involves:

  • Completion of validated and nationally recognised screening questionnaires
  • Review of school reports (if available)
  • An in-depth clinical interview focussing on different areas of your life both past and present
  • A developmental history interview, conducted with someone who has known you well since childhood*
  • Formal diagnostic outcome
  • A comprehensive assessment report and a letter confirming your diagnosis if one is given

* Please note: if you are not able to involve anyone who knew you well as a child, a developmental history interview can be completed with you, and information from informants can be obtained elsewhere.

Testimonial

I would highly recommend working with Emily. She offers a thorough and considerate assessment with a warm and curious approach. I felt as though my perspective and experience were valued highly; while also confident that the outcome would reflect her honest, professional judgement made with full consideration of the evidence base - which she is clearly well-versed in. A very containing and reassuring experience for me.
